Julia Trevarra has been many different people in her life; the awkward fat kid, the trouble-making teen, the clueless, often drunk young woman living on the edge of disaster. After an unsettled childhood full of mischief-making, uncomfortable situations, and hallucinogenic drugs, Julia experiences a devastating loss at just 18 years old. On the brink of adulthood, the only way forward Julia knows is through a chaos of crazy adventures, random encounters with unusual characters, and plenty of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Julia is constantly searching for good times, cheap thrills, and love in all the wrong places. She’ll do anything for a laugh and the novelty of an exciting new experience. Although lost, drifting, and often a hot mess, Julia is determined to find happiness and life purpose despite heartache, confusion, and many wrong turns. So how does Julia finally manage to put her past away, step into the light, and manifest all her biggest dreams come true? No juicy details are omitted from this completely unfiltered, ruthlessly honest, often hilarious and downright bizarre account of the life of a random misfit chick from Maine.

I recently finished reading this memoir. I had a difficult time with it only because it was written, in my opinion, for the younger audience. Most of the book made difficult reading for me because I was lost with all the bands, etc. of the younger generation. When she finally started talking about her spiritual awakening, I began to enjoy the book. The end of the book was back to the same vernacular as the first part and so I was disappointed with the ending.

CrayCray Exposé A totally bizarre memoir Julia Trevarra 9781520990026 Books Reviews

I kept waiting for some huge revelation like I see in many other memoirs I enjoy but it never really happened and then this long collection of memories was just randomly over without any true wrap-up at the end. I had a hard time getting through more than one chapter without wondering if there was any proofreading or grammar checks. The only reason I think I kept reading was how relatable of scenarios I had been in but... that's boring.
Very unorganized and difficult to read. In an attempt to not be too mean, I’ll simply say that I do not recommend this book as a read for anyone, ever.
Great book that I couldn't put down. I can appreciate the craziness of the stories and the humour. Would recommend!
This was like reading about the life of the stoners you went to school with, but never really knew. It was monotonous. Sex, drugs, more sex, more drugs --- grow up and have nothing left to write about. The end.
Pretty much as described. Crazy and bizarre. Good book though
I give Julia credit for trying as I know writing a memoir is quite the challenge; but I couldn't quite make it any higher. Why?
Well, let's start with the good. The author is intelligent and appears to have a good command of the English language with regard to spelling and grammar--not withstanding the cussing, slang and "computer/texting language." She is resourceful --as evidenced by her ability to support herself, find and keep employment fairly easily and get where she needs to be. She also appears to be ambitious in that when she senses that her life is going nowhere or that things feel stagnant, she pursues furthering her education.
I found the memoir over all to be a rather boring read that dragged out the descriptions of partying and mostly meaningless hook ups with men. I mean, how many pages does it truly take to describe the values held (or lack thereof) in one's youth?
The other thing that I didn't care for is that the author, in my opinion, misrepresented a few things. There IS no "mental hospital" in Lewiston, Maine with the exception of a hospital (St. Mary's Regional Medical Center) that DOES have a mental health unit for adults, one for children and also a substance abuse/detox unit. However the hospital itself is a full service medical center first and foremost!
Secondly, she refers to Lewiston Maine in such a derogatory way and since I've lived here for years, I feel I have some authority to set the record straight!
Yes, Lewiston has it's problems. Do you know of any city that doesn't? I'd say one of the biggest issues is poverty within the inner city mostly. Coupled with that, there ARE those who have alcohol or drug addiction but largely, unless one is somehow involved in that lifestyle, you can avoid it being "in your face." The inner city also has a lot of OLD apartment buildings which makes certain areas look unattractive but I wouldn't call it "the dirty Lew" because I choose to focus on what is good about my city.
We are growing in population though not exploding, traffic is reasonable, crime is well below the national average. We have 2 hospitals, multiple schools and 3 colleges as well as churches, grocery stores, and a very good public library.
We have public transportation and parks. We are about 40 minutes from the ocean. We have ski areas, lakes and mountains nearby. We have a large movie complex, public theater, excellent doctors, golf, restaurants, and an annual balloon festival nearby in Auburn, our sister city.
I mostly just found this book very slow moving, it didn't have much of anything to hold my attention and I also found myself feeling sad that the author seemed to have great potential but was wasting it in the drinking, drugs and sex scene.
This book is a really good memoir of a girl that grow up during the same time I did. It has take me back to my own memory of my youth. It's a book that I recomend to all of you beeing young in the 80s and to the younger one that shake your heads at your parents memories. Read it and have Spotify or You tube beside you cause the music she listen to is Awesome
